In the past, garden club members were required to exhibit a horticultural specimen and/or participate in one of many floral design categories. In addition to monthly “casual” club events, members participated in regional competitions. The purpose of these shows was to promote interest in horticulture and educate the public.
We no longer judge flower arrangements at our meetings, but we still like to show off our plants! We have used EGC yearbooks from the1960s as guides for what flowers to highlight each month, adding some modern plants and vegetables, as well.
Edwardsville, IL is in USDA Hardiness Zone 7A, with average minimum winter temperatures around 0° F. Most gardeners in the area have heavy, clay soil. The average yearly rainfall is 38 inches.
